GETTING PERSONAL

Can you think of someone you love whose primary language is Touch? Consider what your physical contact means to that person.

Those who are highly attuned to touch can sense love or affection in the slightest arm squeeze. Physical contact that wouldn’t even register with most people has the potential to change their mood, brighten their day, and make them feel loved. A hug communicates love and affection to most people, but it shouts love to those who speak Touch.

Withholding physical touch from them has the potential to cause pain and anxiety that most nonnative speakers of their language cannot imagine. If someone avoids touching them, they take it personally. They may worry about the state of their relationships. They may feel lonely, even when surrounded by friends.

Here’s the thought process: Whatever there is of me resides in my body. To touch my body is to touch me. To withdraw from my body is to distance yourself from me emotionally. Even if you can’t relate to that, you can respect it, and you can find ways to deliver. So the next time your little brother wants to crawl all over you, let him. The next time your mom tries to put her arm across your shoulder, resist the urge to shrug her off. The next time your friend tries to give you a high five, don’t leave him hanging. You don’t have to change who you are, but you can be physically intentional.
